What is Porutham?

Porutham (also spelled Poruttam) is the Tamil system of marriage compatibility matching. The word itself means "compatibility" or "fitness." When a potential match is being considered, families bring both birth charts to an astrologer (or use a tool like ours) to see how well the two charts align across 10 specific criteria.

Each criterion tests a different dimension of the relationship - from temperament and physical compatibility to the long-term health and prosperity of the marriage. It's one of the most practiced traditions in Tamil culture, and one of the most common reasons people consult astrologers even today.

The system is built primarily on the couple's Nakshatras (birth stars) and Rasis (Moon signs), making the Moon - as in all of Vedic astrology - the central reference point.

The 10 Poruthams

Each Porutham examines a specific aspect of compatibility. Here's what they measure:

  1. Dina Porutham (Star)
Day compatibility based on the count between the couple's birth stars. It assesses general health, daily harmony, and mutual well-being in everyday life together.
  2. Gana Porutham (Temperament)
Each birth star is classified into one of three temperaments: Deva (divine, gentle), Manushya (human, balanced), or Rakshasa (fierce, independent). This porutham checks whether the couple's temperaments are naturally compatible.
  3. Mahendra Porutham (Longevity & Prosperity)
Tests for the longevity of the marriage and the prosperity of the family. Based on counting from the bride's star to the groom's, certain positions are considered auspicious for wealth, children, and a long life together.
  4. Stree Dirgha Porutham (Bride's Star Position)
Measures the distance of the bride's birth star from the groom's. A sufficient distance is believed to ensure the bride's well-being, comfort, and happiness in the marriage.
  5. Yoni Porutham (Animal Symbol)
Each of the 27 birth stars is associated with an animal symbol - horse, elephant, serpent, and so on. This porutham assesses physical and intimate compatibility by checking whether the couple's animal symbols are naturally friendly, neutral, or antagonistic.
  6. Rasi Porutham (Moon Sign)
Compares the couple's Moon signs directly. Certain sign combinations are considered harmonious, while others may indicate friction. This is one of the more intuitive checks - it's essentially asking whether their emotional natures get along.
  7. Rasiyathipathi Porutham (Sign Lord)
Goes one step deeper than Rasi by comparing the ruling planets (lords) of each person's Moon sign. Even if two signs aren't naturally aligned, friendly ruling planets can bridge the gap - and vice versa.
  8. Vasya Porutham (Attraction)
Checks for mutual magnetic attraction between the couple's Moon signs. Certain signs are considered naturally drawn to each other - a kind of instinctive pull that supports bonding and affection over time.
  9. Rajju Porutham (Rope)
Widely considered the most important of all ten. Rajju literally means "rope" - think of it as the thread that holds the marriage together. Each birth star is mapped to a part of the body (feet, hip, neck, head, etc.), and if both partners fall on the same segment, it's considered inauspicious. Many families treat this as non-negotiable.
  10. Vedha Porutham (Affliction)
Checks for harmful star combinations. Certain pairs of birth stars are considered to be in "vedha" (opposition or affliction) to each other, which is believed to bring obstacles and discord. If no vedha exists, this porutham is satisfied.

How Many Need to Match?

Traditionally, at least 7 out of 10 poruthams should match for the marriage to be considered compatible. But the reality is more nuanced than a simple count.

Rajju Porutham is treated as essential by most families - even if the other nine match perfectly, a failed Rajju can give families serious pause. Some astrologers also place extra weight on Dina, Gana, and Yoni as particularly telling indicators.

Practices vary widely across families and regions. Some follow the system strictly, others use it as one factor among many. Urban families may weigh it differently than rural families. There's no single "right" threshold - it depends on family tradition and the astrologer's interpretation.

A Cultural Practice, Not a Verdict

It's worth being clear about what porutham is and what it isn't. It's a traditional compatibility framework - a way to think systematically about whether two people might be well-suited for each other. It's not a prediction, and it's not a verdict.

In practice, families consider many things beyond the birth chart: education, values, family background, personality, and - increasingly - whether the couple actually gets along when they meet. Porutham provides one lens, but it's rarely the only one.

Many happy marriages exist with imperfect porutham scores. And a perfect 10/10 match doesn't guarantee anything on its own. The value of the system lies in the conversations it starts and the attention it brings to compatibility - not in any single number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many poruthams should match for marriage?

Traditionally, at least 7 out of 10 should match. However, the specific poruthams that match matter more than the count. Rajju Porutham is considered essential by most families, and Dina, Gana, and Yoni are also weighted heavily.

What is the most important porutham?

Rajju Porutham is widely considered the most critical. It maps each birth star to a body segment, and matching on the same segment is considered inauspicious. Many families treat Rajju as non-negotiable, even if all other poruthams match.

What happens if Rajju does not match?

A failed Rajju match gives many families pause, but practices vary. Some astrologers look for exceptions or mitigating factors in the broader chart. Others consider the remaining poruthams and the overall chart strength. It is one factor among many.

Can a marriage work with low porutham?

Yes. Many happy marriages exist with imperfect porutham scores. Porutham is a traditional compatibility framework, not a prediction. Real compatibility depends on shared values, communication, mutual respect, and genuine connection. The system provides one lens, not the only one.
