Vedic Relationship Compatibility

What is Porutham?

Porutham is the Tamil system of relationship compatibility matching. It compares two birth charts across 10 specific criteria, each testing a different dimension of the relationship. The system is built primarily on the couple's Nakshatras (birth stars) and Rasis (Moon signs).

Traditionally, at least 7 out of 10 poruthams should match. But the specific matches matter more than the count. Rajju Porutham is considered the most important by most families. Read the full guide to marriage matching.

The 10 Poruthams

  1. Dina - Daily harmony and health
  2. Gana - Temperament compatibility
  3. Mahendra - Longevity and prosperity
  4. Stree Dirgha - Bride's well-being
  5. Yoni - Physical compatibility
  6. Rasi - Emotional harmony (Moon sign)
  7. Rasiyathipathi - Sign lord compatibility
  8. Vasya - Magnetic attraction
  9. Rajju - Marital bond (most critical)
  10. Vedha - Star affliction check

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need exact birth times for both people?

Birth times help determine the exact Nakshatra and Rasi positions. A close estimate works, but the more precise the time, the more accurate the matching. Without a birth time, results may be approximate.

Is this only for marriage?

Porutham is traditionally used for marriage matching, but the compatibility dimensions it measures - emotional harmony, temperament, attraction - apply to any close relationship. Many people check it out of curiosity or cultural interest.
