How this differs from Western astrology

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Tamil Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual positions of the stars. Because of a roughly 24-degree difference between the two systems, your Vedic Moon sign or Sun sign may not match what you see in Western horoscopes. This calculator uses the sidereal system and the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is the standard in the Tamil tradition.

What is a Vedic birth chart?

A Vedic birth chart (also called a Jataka or Kundali) is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It records which zodiac sign each planet occupied, which Nakshatra (lunar mansion) the Moon was passing through, and which sign was rising on the eastern horizon. In the Tamil tradition, this chart is drawn as a square divided into twelve houses.

Because Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, your chart reflects the actual positions of the constellations rather than the season-based divisions used in Western astrology. This calculator computes everything from real astronomical data, applying the Lahiri ayanamsa that is standard in the Tamil tradition.

What you'll discover

Rasi (Moon sign)
The zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. In Tamil astrology, the Moon sign is considered more important than the Sun sign for understanding your emotional temperament and inner nature.
Nakshatra (birth star)
One of 27 lunar mansions, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Your Nakshatra shapes your personality traits, determines your Dasha starting point, and plays a central role in compatibility matching.
Lagna (rising sign)
The zodiac sign ascending on the eastern horizon at the time and place of your birth. The Lagna sets the framework for all twelve houses in your chart and influences how you present yourself to the world.
Dasha timeline
The Vimshottari Dasha system divides your life into planetary periods totaling 120 years. Each period is ruled by a different planet and highlights different themes. Your Nakshatra at birth determines which planet's period you begin life in and how far through it you start.
