What is Muhurtham?

In the Tamil Vedic tradition, Muhurtham refers to the practice of selecting an auspicious time for important life events. Weddings, housewarmings, business launches, and other milestones are timed to align with favorable planetary and lunar conditions, drawn from the Panchangam (the traditional five-part calendar).

The belief is that the quality of a moment matters. Starting an important activity during a favorable window can support better outcomes, while unfavorable periods are best avoided. This practice has been part of Tamil and broader South Indian culture for centuries.

How dates are scored

Each date is evaluated across several Vedic calendar factors. The Nakshatra (lunar mansion) indicates the Moon's position among the 27 star segments. The Tithi (lunar day) reflects the phase of the Moon. The Yogam is a combined Sun-Moon metric that affects overall quality. The day of the week also carries its own associations for different types of events.

These factors are weighted differently depending on the event type. A wedding, for example, places extra emphasis on Nakshatra suitability, while a business launch weighs the day of the week and Yogam more heavily. The final score reflects how well all factors align for your chosen activity.
